Let’s Go Shopping

November 23, 2012

oliday shopping. It's the day before "Black Friday" -- followed by "Small Business Saturday" -- and wrap it all up with "Cyber Monday."

I had to do a little online research to keep all of this straight (thank you, Wikipedia).

Black Friday is the name given to the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, often at 4 a.m. or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season.

Did you know? -- The day's name originated in Philadelphia where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday"?indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit or are "in the black."

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First celebrated Nov. 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.

Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday after Black Friday, created by companies to persuade people to shop online. The term made its debut on Nov. 28, 2005, in a Shop.org press release entitled "'Cyber Monday' Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year."

I like to shop. But, holiday shopping has always been a dilemma for me. I have to ship Christmas to families out of state, then travel so I can be with my son and family. Hint: Airport security does not allow wrapped packages, even in checked luggage. Gift cards are easy to ship, even though they are not very personal.

Have you participated in Black Friday sales? As much as I enjoy shopping, that's not a sale in which I participate. Only once have I witnessed (from across the store) a mob of women grabbing at garments. It didn't matter what size, they grabbed and then ran to the next box. I was too amazed to move, let alone participate in the fray.

And, cyber shopping just isn't my thing. It just doesn't compare to the real thing.

One of the most interesting and fun special sections we produce during the year is the Holiday Gift Guide, which was inserted in The Reporter last Tuesday. That publication takes the editorial staff into numerous Emmetsburg businesses. What a wonderful selection of goods and services our businesses offer. Take some time to shop Small Business Saturday in Emmetsburg. Trust me, you'll like it.
