Jerald (Jerry) R. Day was born Oct. 7, 1930 to Earl and Anabel (Cuddy) Day in Jefferson. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1948.
Jerry married Betty Scheuermann on Jan. 10, 1953 in Jefferson. They celebrated 33 years of marriage and had six children. Betty preceded Jerry in death on July 28, 1986.
He married Karen Hokel on Nov. 25, 1994.
In the 1950's, Jerry served in the Iowa National Guard. He worked for Pocahontas REC and Iowa Lakes REC for 35 years. He retired in 1991.
Jerry was an active supporter of the Emmetsburg community as a member of the Jaycees and promoter of the annual St. Pat's celebration. Jerry was honored to be selected to serve as a 2006 Grand Marshal of the St. Pat's celebration for his contributions to the association.
In his youth, Jerry participated in Golden Gloves competition boxing, rodeo and bronc riding. He was a formidable contender in the Emmetsburg single and pair's tennis tournaments and he was an avid golfer. Jerry loved his Irish heritage and enjoyed two trips to Ireland. He loved socializing, dancing, big band music and sharing his Irish light hearted, jovial spirit.
On Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, Jerry passed away at his home in Sioux City.
Those left to celebrate Jerry's life include; wife, Karen of Sioux City; children: Steve (Audrey) Day of Des Moines, Kathy (Bruce) Denny of Hartley, Patty (Paul) Buhr of Sioux Falls, SD, Rita (Doug) Washburn of Hornick, Jane (Mike) Thompson of Sioux City, Joe (Desiree) Day of Belton, TX, Bruce (Jennifer) Hokel of Sioux City, Lana (Jon) Williams of Emmetsburg; 22 grandchildren; 18 great grand- children; one brother, Robert Day of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister, Sister Celesta Day of La Crosse, WI; and many extended family and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; great-granddaughter, Emma; and son-in-law, Doug Allen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.
