The post season opened on a very positive note for Emmetsburg on Wednesday night with a 41-0 shutout of Ridge View. The win set up a second round matchup between the Gaels of Fort Dodge St. Edmonds on Monday, Oct. 29, at Duane Twait Field in Emmetsburg.
The first round game got off to a very quick start as Emmetsburg got the ball at their own 31 yard line after a return by Brady Christensen. On the first play from scrimmage, Andrew Wellik took a handoff from Jake Jackson and threaded his way through the Raptor defense to race 69 yards for a touchdown just :20 into the game. Nick Merwald put the PAT?kick up and through the pipes for a 7-0 lead at the 11;40 mark of the game.
The E-Hawks quickly worked toward the goal line and Wellik would score off a six yard run with 5:50 to go in the quarter. Merwald added the kick for a 14-0 lead as the E-Hawks had dodged a bullet.
Ridge View would go three downs and then punt on their possession as Emmetsburg took over and began marching downfield once again.
It wouldn't take long for Andrew Wellik to ply his craft again as he scored off a 13 yard run with :45 to go in the quarter. Merwald's kick gave the E-Hawks a 21-0 lead to close out the first quarter.
The Raptors would turn the ball over on downs early in the second quarter, setting the E-Hawks up near mid-field.
Starting at their own 42 yard line, Emmetsburg struck quickly, starting with a 29-yard reception by Nick Schany that brought the E-Hawks down to the Raptor's six yard line. On the next play, Austin McCartan burst through the line to score the six-yard touchdown with 10:17 to go in the half. Merwald's kick was good, making the score 28-0 with plenty of football to be played.
Once again the Raptors took over and tried to drive through the air, but once again, the E-Hawk defense stepped up big to stop the Raptors cold.
Jake Jackson tracked the play on first down and picked off a pass at the Raptors' 32 yard line and returned it to the end zone for the pick-six with 9:25 to play in the half. A bad snap would kill the PAT, making the score 34-0, but the E-Hawks weren't quite done.
Ridge View would get the ball and with the benefit of a holding call against the E-Hawks, got a first down, only to be forced to punt facing fourth and 15 at their 42 with 7:06 to go in the half. The punt was shanked and Emmetsburg recovered at their own 46.
Once again, the offense took over and started working downfield until Cody Henderson took a handoff and raced 33 yards for a score with 4:48 to go in the half. Nick Merwald put the PAT?through the uprights for the 41-0 lead that would carry to the intermission.
With the 35-point rule in effect to start the second half with the continuous clock, the E-Hawk varsity started the second half kicking to the Raptors. Ridge View started a series, only to have their third pass of the night intercepted, this time by Brady Christensen, who returned it to the Ridge View 13 yard line.
Head Coach Mike Dunlap sent the second team offense out at that point, and the reserves, led by Brandon Elbert and running of Allen Jensen, Mitch Petersen and Greg Wesley, got the ball to the five yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Ridge View left their starters in the game and tried to move the ball, but were forced to punt.
Emmetsburg got the ball back at the Raptors' 28 yard line but once again were stopped by the Ridge View defense and a penalty for an illegal receiver downfield.
Ridge View would go three and out against the E-Hawks' reserve defense and gave the ball back after a punt to close out the third quarter with Emmetsburg still holding the 41-0 lead.
The final quarter opened with the E-Hawks facing a third and nine at the Raptors' 39. The E-Hawks would come up short on the fourth down and turned the ball over on downs.
Ridge View would go to the air once again, but for the fourth time in the game, Emmetsburg's defense came up with an interception. This time, Brandon Elbert would steal the throw and returned it 25 yards to the Raptors' 25 yard line with 7:00 to play in the game.
But once again, the E-Hawk offense would stall out and turn the ball over on downs to the Raptors. As a steady rain began falling with time winding down, the Raptors would try to mount a final drive, but would turn the ball over on downs a final time. Emmetsburg would take over and ran the clock out as the rain came pouring down to end the contest with the 41-0 shutout.
The E-Hawks would roll to 287 rushing yards in the win, while the Raptors gained 75 yards on the ground.
Andrew Wellik broke the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the season with his 155 yards off 15 carries in the win. Jake Jackson added 46 yards on four rushes, while Cody Henderson ran four times for 37 yards. Austin McCartan added three carries for 15 yards, with Allen Jensen running eight times to gain 18 yards.
Brady Christensen rand once for 13 yards, while Mitch Petersen had four carries for nine yards, with Brandon Elbert making a three yard run and Jacob Kibbie adding two runs for three yards.
Jake Jackson completed one of two passes for 29 yards and Brandon Elbert attempted one pass.
All told, Emmetsburg racked up 316 total offensive yards while Ridge View had 117 total yards.
For the Emmetsburg defense, Greg Wesley would make 10 tackles in the contest, along with a quarterback sack. Jake Jackson made five tackles and intercepted a pass for a 32 yard return. Brandon Elbert added two tackles with a interception and 25 yard return. Nick Schany had two tackles and a pass interception with 72 yard return and Brady Christensen made one tackle and added a pass interception for a 26 yard return.
