WEST?BEND - The final game of the regular season didn't go well for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate as they ended up on the wrong side of a 56-20 loss to Newell-Fonda. But, the Wolverines managed to earn their 21st trip to the State Football Playoffs this Wednesday night in the process.
The Wolverines would go three and out to start the game and the Mustangs quickly quickly score on their first play from scrimmage.
Newell-Fonda would add in two more touchdowns in the opening quarter to post a 21-0 lead over the Wolverines, who struggled to get their offense to click in their first possessions.
The second quarter would see the Mustangs add another score for a 27-0 lead with just over 6:00 to go in the half, but the Wolverines were able to get things moving at last.
The Wolverines would get the ball after the kick and drove 67 yards to cap off the drive with a 20-yard reception of a Jesse Zinnel pass by Dustin Johnson, but the conversion failed, making the score 27-6.
After NF would turn the ball over on their next possession, the Wolverines got other drive that would come to fruition with :38 remaining in the half. Nathan Grimm would haul in an eight-yard pass from Jesse Zinnel and the two-point conversion would make the score 27-14.
But, Newell-Fonda would get a field goal as time expired in the half to take a 30-14 lead into the intermission.
The Mustangs would open the second half with a quick score for a 36-14 lead and then followed up with an interception return of a Wolverine pass to make the score 43-14 with 3:32 to go in the third. But, NF wasn't done just yet. On their next possession, they scored quickly off a 46 yard run by quarterback Zak Sievert for a 50-14 lead over the Wolverines.
Both teams would continue the scoring in the final frame. The Mustangs added a score for a 56-14 lead.
But the Wolverines would add a final strike off a 50-yard drive that ended with Nathan Grimm running in from a yard out for the 56-20 final score.
Offensively, West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate would get 50 yards off 10 rushes by Jessie Zinnel and Nathan Grimm added three rushes for two yards and Ashton Fehr had a four yard carry and Dan Eubank added seven yards off three carries as the Wolverines gained 76 yards off 20 carries.
Jessie Zinnel completed 16 of 35 pass for 187 yards with Jason Zinnel making three catches for 43 yards and Nathan Grimm making nine catches for 78 yards, Dustin Johnson adding three catches for 34 yards and Davey Jergens adding an 18 yard reception in the effort.
