The regular season is history and the only mountain left to climb for the Emmetsburg Cross Country Teams is the state qualifying meet. Thursday is the day when the Lady E-Hawks and E-Hawks travel to Holstein to run in the Class 1A girls Regional and boys District Cross Country Meets at the Holstein Country Club.
The course is not new to Head Coach Valerie Pickett's harriers, as they competed on the same course back in September, with the Lady E-Hawks edging out perennial foes Bishop Garrigan by a point in that outing.
But the stakes are different Thursday afternoon, as the top ten individual finishers and the top three finishing teams earn qualification to the 2012 State Cross Country Meet, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Lakeside Golf Course, north of Fort Dodge.
The task on Thursday won't be a walkover. Teams competing at the Holstein site include Akron-Westfield, Alta-Aurelia, Ar-We-Va, Bishop Garrigan, Clay Central-Everly, LeMars Gehlen, Harris-Lake Park, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Hinton, Laurens-Marathon and Manson Northwest Webster.
Also competing at the Ridge View site will be Paton-Churdan, Pocahontas Area, Prairie Valley, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Sioux Central, South O'Brien, Granville Spalding, Remsen St. Mary's, Tri-Center-Neola, Trinity Christian of Hull, West Lyon, West Monona, West Sioux and Westwood of Sloan, along with the Emmetsburg girls and boys teams.
Competition for the girls will get underway at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, (Thursday) with the boys action to follow.
A Class 2A regional/district meet will follow the Class 1A action at Holstein on Thursday as well.
