Funeral service for Loretta Pegum, 93, of Emmetsburg and formerly of Graettinger was held Monday, Oct. 8, at the United Methodist Church in Graettinger.
Burial was in the Graettinger City Cemetery. The Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home in Graettinger was in charge of arrangements.
Loretta Mae Pegum was born Nov. 4, 1918, the daughter of Alvin H. and Bertha Mae (Mum) Besaw in Osgood. She attended country schools.
On Nov. 6, 1933, Loretta was united in marriage to Gabriel F. Pegum in Emmetsburg. They made their home in Graettinger where they raised their family. In 1945, Gabriel joined the United States Army, and he was stationed in Joplin, MO. The couple spent two years there before returning to Graettinger.
Loretta worked as a nurse's aide, and she helped several farmers in the Graettinger area. She and Gabriel were also caretakers of Valley View Cemetery for a number of years.
Loretta was a fantastic cook. She made the best homemade bread, buns and pies. She liked western books and movies, working word find puzzles and taking rides along the countryside. Most of all, Loretta loved being with her family.
On Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, Loretta passed away at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Donna Nissen (Norman) of Graettinger, Mary Libby (Bill) of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Donald Pegum of Emmetsburg, Darold Pegum (Barb) of Milford, and Peggy Libby of Streator, IL; three sisters: Marjorie Lockwood of Fenton, Gudrid Haynes of Fort Scott, KS, JoAnn Love of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 7-1/2 great-great-grandchildren.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gabriel; sister, Lula Curry; four brothers, Jack Besaw, Guy Besaw (Viola), Earl Besaw and Herbie Besaw; and an infant sister, Delores.
