Wolverines Outdistance Titans

GRAETTINGER - Once again, penalties would come back to haunt Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in a 26-12 loss to the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Friday night.

The win improves the Wolverines to 2-0 in the District and 4-1 overall while the Titans are 0-2 in the league and 0-4 on the season.

The Titans of GT/RA took the early lead on Friday at Rod Hough Field in Graettinger when quarterback Blaze Alesch connected with Garrett Parker on a nine-yard pass with 10:17 to go in the first quarter after the conversion try failed.

West Bend- Mallard/ Gilmore City-Bradgate managed to answer the Titans with 2:11 to go off a one-yard run to tie the score at 6-6 when the first stanza came to a close.

The Wolverines would come right back in the second quarter, scoring off another one-yard run with 6:14 to play in the half, and added the two-point conversion for a 14-6 advantage.

But the Titans weren't ready to pack up. Blaze Alesch cracked off a 57-yard run off a keeper with 1:53 to go in the half to score, but the conversion failed, leaving the Titans trailing by a pair at 14-12 as the half ended.

The second half opened with West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate giving themselves a little breathing room with a one yard run at the end of the third quarter as the two teams traded possessions through the quarter.

Trailing 20-12 to start the final frame, the Titans found themselves their own worst enemy at times, as penalties would end up costing them 85 yards in the contest as their efforts to score were stymied in the final frame.

The Wolverines added the insurance score with 6:44 to go in the contest off a 24-yard pass from Jesse Zinnel to Jason Zinnel for the score. The two point conversion would give the Wolverines their 14-point, 26-12 advantage for the victory.

For GT/RA, the Titans had 22 rushing plays for 139 yards on the ground. Blaze Alesch rushed the ball eight times to gain 78 yards and score one touchdown. Carter Williamson added 10 carries for 24 yards and Kyle Dalen picked up 13 yards off four rushes.

Alesch completed four of 11 passes for 29 yards, with Trevor Hagedorn making a 20 yard catch and Garrett Parker making the nine-yard touchdown reception, with Kyle Dalen making two catches for no gain.

Defensively for the Titans, Zach Chicoine recovered a fumble and Alesch snagged an interception with no return. Carter Williamson made 18 tackles while Mason McGrauth had 15 and Alesch had 12. Michael Girres came up with nine tackles including a pair of sacks.

West Bend-Mallard/Gil-more City Bradgate would rack up 234 yards on the ground off 61 attempts. Jesse Zinnel would rush the ball eight times for 34 yards and scored two touchdowns. Nathan Grimm had 24 carries for 143 yards, while Dan Eubank added nine rushes for 48 yards. Jesse Zinnel connected on eight of 15 passes for 182 yards. Jason Zinnel mady four catches for 94 yards, while Kurt Banwart had a 24 yard catch. Jordan Bush had an 18 yard reception and Nate Grimm had a 34 yard catch for a touchdown, while Jack Fehr had a 12 yard catch for a score.

Defensively, the Wolverines got seven tackles and a quarterback sack from Aaron Montag, while Jesse Zinnel made six tackles. Nat Grimm added five tackles to the effort.

Both teams now look forward to Homecoming contests this week as the Wolverines will play host to the Bison of North Iowa this Friday evening, while the Titans will host CAL-Latimer for their Homecoming tilt.
