Riek Mary Bekx 1924-2012

GRAETTINGER -- Riek Mary Bekx was born Dec. 8, 1924, in Helmond, Netherlands, the daughter of Antoon Van Den Hurk and Norberta Van Der Velden. She attended grade school in Helmond.

On Feb. 24, 1954, Riek was united in marriage to Marion Bekx in Helmond, Netherlands. Riek joined her husband, Marion, in the United States on May 27, 1954. The couple made their home near Graettinger where they farmed all of their working lives.

In 2000, Riek and Marion moved into Graettinger where they retired. Marion passed away on Aug. 3, 2004.

Riek was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Birthday Club and several card clubs. She enjoyed spending time with friends and playing cards.

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, Riek passed away at the Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Edward Bekx of Emmetsburg; grandson, Tony Bekx of Rock Rapids; three brothers, Antoon Van Den Hurk (Gerda) of Waterford, Ontario, Canada, Jeff Van Den Hurk (Hermine) of Simcoe, Ontario, Canada and Louis Van Den Hurk (Maria) of The Netherlands; sisters-in-law, Betsie Van Den Hurk, of The Netherlands, Nellie Bekx and Liz Bekx of Wisconsin and Laura of The Netherlands; brothers-in-law, Harry Bekx (Ann) of Windom, MN, Ben Bekx, and Joe Bekx of The Netherlands; niece, Nori Van Den Hurk and her husband, Mike Moran and their children, Tess and Anika of Emmetsburg; three very close friends, Judy Weis and Arlene Joynt, both of Emmetsburg, and Rev. Msgr. Michael Sernett of Estherville; many nieces and nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion; five brothers: Martinus, Johannus, Petrus, Huub and Harrie Van Den Hurk; and her sister, Johanna Van Den Berkmortel; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Services were held Monday, Sept. 17, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger. Burial was in St. Jacob's Cemetery. The Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
