BLAIRSBURG - The Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate opened their district slate in fine style with a 52-12 victory over Northeast Hamilton in Blairsburg Friday night. The win improves the Wolverines to 1-0 in Eight-Man District Two play and 2-1 overall on the season.
The next task for the Wolverines will be the annual in-county rivalry with Graettinger-Terril/ Ruthven-Ayrshire's Titans this coming Friday at Graettinger's Rod Hough Field.
Before Friday's contest, Coach Pete Kapustynski noted that the Wolverines had been waiting for a breakout performance from Jordan Buhs. Friday would be the night, as Buhs would score two touchdowns from scrimmage for the purple and gold, and then came up with a 65-yard kickoff return for a score on his way to 59 yards of rushing from six carries.
Unfortunately, Buhs would do all of his damage in the first half, as he would not play the second half after sustained an injury.
However, the Wolverine attack was still functional all evening long. Jesse Zinnel would carry the ball 12 times to rack up 128 yards and score one touchdown, while Ashton Fehr added 10 carries for 85 yards, including a 13 yard scoring run.
Nathan Grimm would rush the ball nine times to gain 47 yards and Davey Jergens added seven yards off three carries.
Overall, WBM/GCB would rack u p326 yards off rushing offense in the contest.
Jesse Zinnel would complete four of 11 passing attempts for 93 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Jason Zinnel would make two catches to pick up 46 yards and score one touchdown. Ashton Fehr made a 38-yard touchdown reception and Kurt Banwart had a 10-yard reception for the Wolverines.
The defense got its' licks in during the contest, as Nathan Grimm led the effort with 13 tackles. Dustin Johnson came up with 11 stops after seeing limited action the week before. Dan Eubank also made 11 tackles and Aaron Montag added eight tackles.
Dustin Johnson and Jessie Zinnel both intercepted passes in the victorious effort.
