Swim Team Opens Fall Season

The high school swimming season started this past Thursday for the Algona-Bishop Garrigan-Emmetsburg-Estherville Lincoln Central Swim Team. Coach Jim Fisher returns for his tenth season leading the squad, which will enjoy the leadership of several seniors, including two Emmetsburg swimmers.

Hannah Priest of Emmetsburg will return to lead the squad in the Freestyle and Breastroke events, and teammate Alyssa Williams will also return in the Freestyle events.

Other seniors include Nicole Kenne in the 500 meter Freestyle, Amber Schacherer in the Butterfly and Freestyle events and MacKenzie Wilson in the Butterfly and Freestyle.

Rounding out the seniors on the squad are Erica Carlson in the Freestyle, Michaela Christian in the Freestyle and Kendra Roethler in the Freestyle events.

Joining the seniors will be Emmetsburg Junior Maddie Stubbs, who will swim the Individual Medley and the Freestyle events, along with junior Abby Strohman in the Breastroke and Freestyle and sophomore Emma Plathe in the Freestyle

Also returning to the squad are Joanna Wilson and Lindsey Humble, while newcomers to the squad include Leah Hamilton, Emily McMahon, Conner Yi and Casey Harms.

The 2011 swim team finished the season with t-7 mark in duals, including a third place finish at the Des Moines North Invitational, an eighth place finish at the Regionals and a Sixth place finish in the 100 meter Freestyle Relay at the Regional meet.

"We're hoping to go .500 in duels and finish higher at regionals with more medal winners," according to Fisher, when asked about the squad's goals for the season.

The campaign got underway this past Thursday evening when the swim team traveled to Perry and earned a split in their double duel swim meet with Des Moines Lincoln and Perry.

The first duel of the season saw the Algona swimmers fall to DM LIncoln by a 27-67 tally.

Both the 200 meter Medley and 200 Freestyle Relay teams both finished second Both teams were comprised of Erica Carlson, Hannah Priest, Alyssa Williams and Maddie Stubbs.

Hannah Priest took first place honors in the 50 meter freesyle and 100 meter breaststroke. Maddie Stubbs captured second place honors in the 200 meter Individual Medley and Leah Hamilton finished second in the 100 ,meter free.

"This was a big improvement over last year as we scored 12 points more against Lincoln, which was a goal of the team going into the season - to be more competitive," noted Coach Fisher.

The nightcap saw the Algona swimmers defeat Perry by a score of 49-45.

The 200 Medley team, 200 Freestyle and 400 Free relay teams all finished second. The 200 relay team consisted of Amber Schacherer, Emma Plathe, Kandice Roethler and MacKenzie Wilson while the 400 team was comprised of Hamilton, Schacherer, Carlson and Emily Mcmahon.

Second place finishes went to Hamilton in the 200 and 100 free, Maddie Stubbs in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly and Carlson in the 100 back.

The 200 Free Relay, comprised of Carlson, Hannah Priest, Alyssa Williams and Maddie Stubbs won the event, while Hannah Priest captured victories in the 50 Free and the 100 breaststroke events.

Nicole Kenne earned first place finishes as well in the 200 and 500 free events.

"It was good to get this one because we had a lot of new and different lineups and we were able to see different girls in competition," said Coach Fisher. "We had five new swimmers in the lineups and they all did well. In fact, the JV won also by a 33-16 score with the 200 Medley Relay team of Casey Harms, McMahon, Conner Yi and Emma Plathe earning first, as did the 200 free team of Harms, McMahon, Yi and Justine Yeoman. "

Fisher continued, "An individual first when to Plathe in the 50 free, Harms in the 100 back, McMahon in the100 breast stroke and Yi in the 100 fly."

With a mark of 1-1 on the young season, the Algona Area swimmers have the week to practice before taking to the pool on Tuesday, Sept. 4, when they travel to Boone for action.

Sept. 13 the squad will host a home meet at the Algona Aquatic Center. On Sept. 23.
