Emmetsburg Harriers Optimistic For Upcoming Cross Country Season

August 21, 2012
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

With six returning letterwinners, the outlook for Emmetsburg's Cross Country teams would appear very positive. When you break things down a little further, there are several reasons why Head Coach Valerie Pickett is very optimistic about the team's 2012 campaign.

On the guys side, it will be a rebuilding year for us,"?Pickett admitted.

With five out of the top six boys runners graduating last spring, the E-Hawks turn to a pair of juniors for their leadership this season. Graduation took Zach Overberg, Chad Loomis, Daniel Pelzer, Max Jones and Marcel Pohlman.

Brett Steinkamp and Michael Pugh will be called on to not only pace the E-Hawk boys squad, but also to help guide the new runners as they adapt to the high school level of competition.

Steinkamp turned in a season's best effort of 21:44 at the Junior Varsity level last season, while Pugh turned in a best effort of 22;06.

For the Lady E-Hawks, the scenario is much the opposite.

Graduation took the squad's lone senior, Kristi Wurzer, but a trio of juniors and a sophomore return to step up and lead the way.

Sophomore Caroline Fantz will be looked to be one of the leaders after she turned in a season's best time of 17:30, and will be pushed by junior Taylor Reimer, who ran a best of 17:58 last Fall.

Rachel Ruddy will also contend for leadership with her best mark of 18:56 last Fall, and Madison Reimer will round out the returning letterwinners, as she recorded a best effort of 21:11 last season.

However, the Lady E-Hawks will be without two strong runners, as Hadley Egland did not return to the squad due to injury and state qualifier Olivia Smith moved away.

But, there are several bright spots coming up for the Lady E-Hawks with seven new runners joining the program.

"With these seven new girls, I?feel it will be a very exciting year for the squad,"?Pickett said. "The ladies finished fourth last year at the State Qualifying meet, where the top three advance to state, and my hope is this will be the year the girls' team can return to the State Meet in Fort Dodge, and with the experience and talent, I?think this is a very obtainable goal."
