Emmetsburg News

Funeral service for Lorene Hansen is 4 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Shared Ministry in Rolfe. Burial is in Clinton-Garfield Cemetery, Rolfe.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene Hansen, originally of Rolfe, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg. She was 95.

Lorene Leah Kipfer was born on Nov. 12, 1916, near Rolfe. She was the daughter of Noah and Bertha (Birky) Kipfer.

Lorene was educated in the Lake 3 country school, seven miles south of Rolfe. She could remember picking corn by hand, when roads were dirt and electricity came to the farm. She graduated from Rolfe High School.

On May 22, 1935, Lorene and Carl Hansen eloped to Pipestone, MN. The couple lived in Rolfe, and Carl ran a corn sheller and built his own trucking business, hauling livestock and corn to markets throughout the Midwest. Lorene loved to travel, and would occasionally join Carl on trips to Chicago and Missouri.

Lorene gave birth to their first son, Arlen, in October of 1936, and to their second son, Dennis, in August of 1944. She created a home, and raised, educated and lived for her sons and their families.

After Arlen and Dennis left home, Carl and Lorene continued to travel a great deal, visiting the Grand Canyon, Montreal, and roaming all across the country in their Ford Falcon bus. They especially enjoyed visiting Arlen in California and Dennis in Maine, and spending time with their grandchildren.

After Carl's death in 1981, Lorene continued to travel, visiting Boston, California, Vienna, London, and all throughout Europe.

Lorene, known as "Mimi" to her family, was a loving mother and grandmother. She was strong and honest, with a caring heart and a fierce intelligence. She was an active and involved grandparent, and holds a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her younger son, Dennis Hansen of Emmetsburg; sister, Fern Funk of Graettinger; brother, Ervin, and his wife Arlis Kipfer of Eatonville, WA; her beloved grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her elder son, Arlen Hansen; her sister, Evelyn Hansen; and her brother, Eldridge Kipfer.
