On A Sweet Note

July 12, 2012
by Lori Hall , Emmetsburg News

I received this absolutely fabulous press release at the newspaper this week regarding the new food items that will be featured at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. I don't know about you, but I always get a kick out of the insane concessions that are highlighted each season. Remember the deep fried Twinkies and deep fried Oreos of years past? How about the deep fried stick of butter?

According to the press release, the Elwell Family Food Center will feature a life-size moose made of Dutch chocolate. The moose, created by the master chocolatiers at Chocolaterie Stam, will stand more than nine-feet tall. This is something the chocoholics in my family would appreciate.

The Food Center is also home to the largest foods department in the nation with 893 contests, 43 of which are new this year. New contests include A Taste of Ireland, Seattle's Best Coffee "Search For Deliciousness," Best Pizza in Iowa, Gramp's Bacon, and more. While whipping up a pie or a jar of jam for the contests sounds intriguing, a stroll on the fairgrounds to check out the new food booths could be just the thing, too.

There are gourmet s'mores, and peach, apple, or cherry crisps.

One booth is even offering Caribbean-style crab fritters.

How about a German chocolate funnel cake, a carrot cake funnel cake, or a blue sapphire funnel cake?

Check out the chocolate chip cannolis and chocolate chip cookie dough pops, both dipped in chocolate and on a stick, naturally.

Don't forget to taste test the deep fried pickle "dawgs."

And last, but not least, there is the new Fair Square flavor made with marshmallows, crisped rice cereal, pretzels, potato chips, Oreos, toffee, and M&Ms.

Fair Squares are the official treat of the Iowa State Fair. They are usually made from crisped rice cereal and made-from-scratch marshmallow and are served on-a-stick. All proceeds from the sale of the treats benefit the Iowa State Fair's Blue Ribbon Foundation.

I haven't been to the Iowa State Fair in years, and my family hasn't been at all. So, maybe, just maybe, we'll have to venture to Des Moines to check out the food and fun.

This year's fair theme is "Nothing Compares" and the festivities will run from August 9 through August 19. A complete listing and details of all daily programs is available online at www.iowastatefair.org.
