GRAETTINGER -- Funeral service for LuVerne Petersen of Graettinger was held Friday, June 22, at the United Methodist Church in Graettinger.

Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Graettinger. The Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home in Graettinger was in charge of arrangements.

LuVerne Carl Petersen was born Aug. 12, 1925, on the family farm in Palo Alto County. He attended Blue Bottom Country School. Following his education, Verne worked on the family farm and help to raise his younger siblings.

On Dec. 4, 1945, LuVerne was united in marriage to Velma Elnora Powers. The couple made their home where Verne had lived since he was nine years old. Verne farmed northeast of Graettinger until his retirement, and he continued to live on the farm.

Verne was a member of the United Methodist Church in Graettinger. He enjoyed fishing at his cabin in Okoboji, gardening, playing cards, and keeping up on current events over coffee at Studer's and the Elevator. Farming was his pride and joy, but above all things, Verne cherished the time he spent with his family.

On Monday, June 18, 2012, Luverne passed away at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. He was 86.

Left to cherish his memory are three sons: Jerry (Leann) of Graettinger, Tony (Rosemary) of Minneapolis and Greg (Deb) of Ruthven; four sisters: Irene Ehlers of Estherville, Loretta Moore of Corsica, SD, Doris Peterson of Havelock and LaVon Petersen of Graettinger; two brothers: Delbert of Estherville and Merle of Apache Junction, AZ; son-in-law, Pat Thrasher of DeSoto, KS; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elnora; daughter, Patricia Thrasher; three sisters: Hilda Luke, Mildred Luke and Edna Weir; and four brothers: Fred, Lloyd, Henry and Alvin.
