For the second year in a row, Emmetsburg's seventh grade girls track team claimed second place honors at the Mike Henderson Middle School State Track Championships. The event was held Saturday, May 5, at Waukee. Coach Sue Strube's squad finished behind Mount Vernon in the team standings for their second-peat performance at state.
The Shuttle Hurdle relay team from EMS set a new State Meet record with its time of 1:17.85 in winning the event. Members of the relay were Bailey Naig, Sara Pugh, Helena Fantz and Ashley Overberg.
The 4x200 relay, Bailey Naig, Shelby Loomis, Helena Fantz and Jordan Lange, also took a first place finish with a 2:20.3 clocking.

Natalie Ruiz earned a second place finish in the shot put, throwing 28'4", while Kayla Joyce threw the discus 80'2" to place third and Ashley Overberg earned a third place finish in the 10 flight hurdles with a time of :17.85.
The 4x400 relay team, comprised of Jordan Lange, Helena Fantz, Shelby Loomis and Ashley Overberg, finished third with their time of 4:59 while the 800 meter Medley Relay, featuring Natalie Ruiz, Kayla Joyce, Jordan Lange and Bailey Naig, also finished third with a time of 2:11.4.
Shelby Loomis earned fourth place honors in the long jump as she came away with a leap of 13'10.5" and the 4x100 relay, with Sara Simington, Sarah Pugh, Natalie Ruiz and Kayla Joyce, finished fourth with a 1:01.13 clocking.
Kate Jackson earned fifth place in the shot put, throwing the orb 23'8" and Natalie Ruiz claimed sixth in the discus with a throw of 57'2", while Ashley Overberg cleared 4'2" in the high jump to place sixth.
Helena Fantz would finish ninth in the long jump with a leap of 12'11" and Shelby Loomis placed ninth in the 100 meter dash with a time of :14.8. Jordan Hoyman finished 11th in the 1500 meter run, while Kayla Joyce was 12th in the 100 meter dash with a :14.9 effort and Sara Pugh took 12th in the 10 flight hurdles with a :20.4 clocking.
Sara Simington placed 15th in the 200 meter dash with a :32.2 time and Jordan Hoyman was 16th in the 200 meter hurdles with a :38.5 clocking and then finished 20th in the 800 meter run with a time of 3:08.5.
Rounding out the seventh grade efforts was Kate Jackson in the 800 meter run as she finished 25th.
For the Emmetsburg Eighth graders, no team points were accumulated on Saturday, but several good efforts were made by the girls.
In the shot put, Olivia Hampe finished 10th with a throw of 25'4" and in the 1600 Meter Medley Relay, the foursome of Kaity Mason, Erin Poeppe, Kiersten Duhn and Cierra McAllister finished 11th with a time of 4:58.2
Cierra McAllister would finish 13th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:53.6 and then finished 15th in the 10 flight hurdles with an :18.8 clocking.
The 800 meter Medley Relay, with Shea Ehlert, Kiersten Duhn, Erin Poeppe and Bailee Garrelts, finished 16th with a 2:16.5 time.
Cierra McAllister placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 12'11.5", while Shea Ehlert took 18th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 16:01 and Bailee Garrelts placed 18th in the Discus, throwing 62'3".
Kaity Hoffman would finish 23rd in the shot put with a throw of 19'5", while Olivia Hampe threw the discus 62' but did not place and Kaity Mason jumped 12'5" in the long jump.
The Mike Henderson Middle School State Track Meet is sponsored annually by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches in honor of Mike Henderson, long-time information director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
