The Smith Wellness Center in Emmetsburg will once again host the 10th Annual Northwest Iowa Bench Press Classic. This year's event is set for this Saturday, March 31, with lifting action schedule to begin at 10 a.m. in the Wellness Center gym.
The Northwest Iowa Bench Press Classic is a non-sanctioned event that is designed for the serious lifter who wants to see what they have accomplished in a year of hard work, but in a competitive setting.
As in the past nine years of the Northwest Bench Press Classic, there will be competition in various age divisions, with competitors from the local area as well as across the state.
Each competitor will be completely focused on lifting the barbells when they take their turn on the bench. Weight classes include 114, 123, 132, 148, 165, 181, 198, 220, 242, 275 pound and heavyweight classes for men and 105, 114, 123, 132, 148, 165, 198 pound and over classes for women.
Competition divisions include Teen I for lifters from 12 to 15 years of age; Teen II for lifters 16 to 19 years of age; Novice I for 20 to 24 year olds; Novice II for lifters 25 through 29 years of age and Submasters, lifters ranging from 30 to 39 years. Master I lifters are from the ages of 40 to 44, while Master II lifters are 50 to 59 years and Master III lifters are 60 years of age and over.
An Open Class will round out the competition.
The Bench Press competition features trophies for the top three finishers in each class, along with an official event t-shirt.
Anyone who is interested in lifting in the competition can contact Angie Roethler at the Smith Wellness Center at Iowa Lakes Community College by calling (712)-852-5311 for complete rules, information or entry forms.
The public is welcomed and encouraged to come out on Saturday and cheer on the lifters.
