ALGONA - The final score ended up as a 34-28 loss for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate in a Class 1A District Quarterfinal tournament game Tuesday night. But the final score was not truly indicative of the game.
After a solid start by the Lady Wolverines, an 11-minute span where the purple and gold couldn't buy a basket through the end of the second quarter and into the third stanza made the game against the Golden Bears of Bishop Garrigan truly interesting.
The Lady Wolverines came out with a quick lead off three straight buckets by Jessica Abrahamson and would hold a 10-9 lead after the opening frame. In the second quarter, the offense's of both teams cooled significantly.

The Lady Wolverines would score one bucket in the second quarter, while Bishop Garrigan scored five points to take a 14-12 lead at halftime, as turnovers due to ball handling errors and clinging defense on both ends of the court made the game a bit wild.
As the third quarter opened, the scoring drought continued for the Lady Wolverines, as they were unable to put the ball through the hoop until a free throw by Abrahamson with just under 2:00 to go.
Trailing 25-13 to start the final quarter, the Lady Wolverines erupted like a volcano. A quick flurry of possessions would result in 10 unanswered points to cut the deficit to a deuce, 25-23, with 5:00 to play.
The two teams would trade buckets over the next few minutes, with Abrahamson evening the score at 28-28 with 1:37 to go. But the Lady Wolverines would go scoreless from that point on as Bishop Garrigan would go on to add a bucket and a pair of trips to the free throw line to earn the 34-28 win.
For WBM/GCB, Jessica Abrahamson would lead the offensive effort with 13 points, while McKenzie Grimm added six points. Kaley Lempke would come up with a four point offering, while Kayla Banwart chipped in three points and Sarah Berte added two points.
