RUTHVEN -- Funeral service for Thorvald L. Jacobsen of Ruthven was held Saturday, Jan. 28, at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Roger Maize officiated.
Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven was in charge of arrangements.
Thorvald LaVerne Jacobsen, son of John and Dorthea (Olson) Jacobsen, was born March 7, 1920, in the Ruthven-Graettinger area. He received his education in the rural school systems.
In 1941 Thorvald joined the United States Army Air Corps. He served in India and was discharged in 1945. In May of 2011 he attended the Honor Flight visiting the National WWII Monument in Washington, D.C.
On June 10, 1945 he was united in marriage to Gail Umbrell in Ruthven. The couple farmed in the Ruthven area for 35 years, retiring in 1981. The couple traveled extensively and wintered in Arizona. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for 65 years.
Thorvald passed away on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at his home, at the age of 91.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Edith Eaton, Mary Knutson, Erna Sorensen, Viola Olson and Darlene Jacobsen; two brothers, Frank and Russel; daughter, Tina Jacobsen and a son in law Roger Bunton.
Thorvald is survived by his wife, Gail of Ruthven: son, Gary (Barbara) Jacobsen of Minneapolis, MN; two daughters, Judy Bunton of St. Joseph, MO and Linda (Paul) Pingel of Fort Dodge: 10 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Moore of Ruthven and Arlene Jacobsen of Spencer.
