Lighting The Way

December 22, 2011
Emmetsburg News
Last Sunday evening, Dec. 18, Harrison Street in Emmetsburg was illuminated by several “luminarias” in front of most homes. Cars slowly drove down Harrison Street on Sunday to admire the luminarias and other Christmas lights and decorations. The Mexican custom of “Luminarias” symbolizes “Lighting the way for Christ.” The custom is to line the sidewalks and/or driveways with paper bags and/or plastic milk jugs glowing with flickering candles. Some homeowners even used Mason jars this year, which created a lovely glow in the dark night. Brian and Janis Campbell, who live at 301 Harrison Street, began this tradition in 1993, and others have participated throughout the years. --Lori Hall photo
