DES MOINES Call it an early Christmas gift, or call it just a reprieve, but an announcement from postal authorities is making the holidays a little brighter for now in several area communities. Officials of the United States Postal Service announced late last week that a moratorium has been passed by the Postal Board of Governors to delay any potential post office closures until at least May of 2012.
The news directly affects post offices in Ayrshire, Curlew and Cylinder in Palo Alto County, along with post offices in Bradgate, LuVerne, Dolliver, Havelock, Plover, Lone Rock, Wallingford, Gillett Grove, Fostoria, Superior, Webb, Marathon, Linn Grove and Palmer in surrounding counties.
Postal Officials are attempting to reduce expenses to address continuing financial deficits for the service, which does not receive tax dollars for funding. All funding comes from the sales of postage and services.
