Douglas E. Nelson 1950-2011

GRAETTINGER -- Funeral service for Douglas E. Nelson of Graettinger was Monday, Dec. 19, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger. Pastor Christine Lang officiated.

Burial was in Lost Island Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lost Island. Military rites were conducted at the grave site by members of Nelson-Christensen American Legion Post #162, Graettinger. The Henry-Olson Funeral Home was in charge.

Douglas Edward Nelson, the son of Harry and Betty (Hermanson) Nelson, was born Dec. 5, 1950 in Estherville. Doug departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at his home in Graettinger, at age of 61.

He was baptized and confirmed at Lost Island Lutheran Church. He received his education in the Graettinger schools graduating in 1969. Doug served in the United States Army National Guard during the Vietnam era and received an honorable discharge.

In February of 1972, he was united in marriage to Kathy Westby. Doug loved to farm and worked with his father from a very young age also milking cows and raising hogs. He also worked for his uncle at Stueve Construction. Doug from an early age also spent his summers at the Redwood Resort and took it over for Grama Olive in 1988. On March 23, 1990, Doug was united in marriage to Gale Starkey. In 1994, Doug and Gale purchased the Redwood and operated it until 2004. They made many great friends. Doug always looked forward to Friday when the campers started coming back. He enjoyed traveling and making trips to Canada, NASCAR Racing and the Chicago Bears. Doug especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger. He was on the Graettinger Labor Day Committee/Community Club and was Grand Marshall of the 2011 Labor Day Parade. He was also a member of Nelson-Christensen American Legion Post 162. Doug was also a past member of Lost Island Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and President of the Congregation. He served on the Graettinger School Board and the Graettinger Development Council.

Left to cherish Doug's memory are his wife, Gale of Graettinger; his children, Kelley and Tom Jewell and their children, Paige and Noah; Stacy and Joe Whitney and their children, Cooper, Jordyn and Amanda; Dan and Melissa Torreson and their children, Kristen and Carson; Clint Nelson and special friend, Kari Kinnetz; Angie Torreson and fiance, Scott Sorbo; David Torreson and special friend, Tabby Murphy and son, Wyatt; Zach Nelson; brothers, Dennis Nelson and his wife, Joan of Coal Valley, IL; David Nelson and his wife, Teresa of Moline, IL; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda Walrath of Tucson, AZ; Becky Murray and her husband, Terry of Graettinger; Kay Starkey of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law and brother-in-law, Greg.
