Funeral service for Bessie D. Voigt of Emmetsburg was Monday, Dec. 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Louie Q. Gallo officiated.
Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Bessie Doris Voigt, daughter of Selmer and Christine (Madsen) Heng, was born June 1, 1918, in Cylinder. She began her education in Fairfield Township country school and graduated from Cylinder High School in 1936. Bessie took normal training in Cedar Falls and became a teacher.
Bessie taught in country schools around Cylinder for six years. On Nov. 10, 1944, Bessie was united in marriage to Carl V. Voigt in Emmetsburg. To this union four children were born.
Carl and Bessie made their home near Fenton where Carl farmed with his father. After one year they began farming near Dolliver, Fenton and Cylinder until 1965. In 1976 Bessie and Carl moved into Emmetsburg. Bessie was employed as a cook at the Quality Caf and the Chik-Tok Caf from 1969 until 1984 when she retired.
Bessie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg and a past member of the United Methodist Church in Cylinder, where she taught Sunday School for ten years and served as past president of the United Methodist Women.
Bessie passed away Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at the Sanford Health Center in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 93.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; three brothers, Wil-liam, Ralph and Clifford Heng; and one sister, Mary Ann Friedricksen.
She is survived by her children, Charles and Lynn Voigt of Altoona, Carol and Lyle Frederick of Emmetsburg, Thomas and Carol Voigt of Pataskala, OH and David Voigt of Fort Dodge; ten grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Damstrom of Emmetsburg and Catherine Dillon (Gerald) of Emmetsburg.
