POCAHONTAS - With a senior-dominated group on the floor and some sharp play off the bench, Emmetsburg's E-Hawks opened their 2011-12 basketball season with a 66-45 win over the Indians of Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer Tuesday night. Coach Mike Brennan's E-Hawks took a two-point halftime lead and turned it into a 21-point victory after taking command of the game in the second half.

Emmetsburg opened the game by taking a 13-10 lead after the first quarter of action, but shortly after the start of the second frame, the Indians made a run and stole the lead away after a three-pointers at 14-13. The E-Hawks had several easy shots rim in and out of the cylinder for a brief stretch, but a three-ball from Ryan Kliegl would help the E-Hawks retake the lead for the 26-24 halftime advantage.

Emmetsburg came out gunning in the second half, as junior Jake Jackson got the momentum swinging in the E-Hawks' favor with back-to-back three-pointers. The mini run would boost the E-Hawks out to a 13-point lead that would eventually grow as high as 17 points before the Indians narrowed the gap to 45-31 to end the third frame.

The E-Hawks would get some good play off the bench in the final stanza, after Jake Carlson went to the bench with his fourth foul. Coach Mike Brennan tent sophomore Austin Krause into the fray and Krause would make the most of his minutes with eight straight points, as he would be fouled on two successive layups, making the buckets and the free throws before adding a third layup as Emmetsburg would pull away for the 21-point win.

Jake Jackson led the scoring with 26 points, while Jake Carlson added 12 points. Marcus Akridge would come away with nine points and Austin Krause added his eight point flurry. Zach Overberg chipped in six points, while Ryan Kliegl tallied three points. Joe Jackson and Michael Pugh would come off the bench to add a free throw each.

Emmetsburg will open the Lakes Conference race on Tuesday, Dec. 6 when they host Estherville Lincoln Central.
