WEST?BEND - The Cornbelt conference season opened Tuesday night with a win for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate over the Ruthven-Ayrshire/Graettinger-Terril Raider boys in a 49-37 decision. The win improves the Wolverines to 1-0 in the league and 1-1 overall while the Raiders are 0-1 in the league and on the season.
The Wolverines took an early lead off some good shooting but fell off in the second quarter as the Raiders played a solid defensive game but struggled to get shots to fall.
WBM/GCB would get their shooting touch back in the second half and would battle through the half with the Raiders to persevere to the 12-point victory.
For the Wolverines, Jesse Zinnel had 14 points and Chris Schmidt added 13. Mitch Bonnstetter tallied nine points, while Jordan Buhs added seven points to the effort. Justin Zinnel added five points and Kolten Goodchild sank a free throw.
For the Raiders, Dylan Smith had 12 points and Colin Leiting added 10 points, with Mitch Girres scoring nine points. Dylan Fisher had four points and Austin Dyer added two points to the effort.
