Wolverines Advance With 68-34 First-Round Victory

WEST?BEND - The West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Wolverines took a 68-34 win over Laurens-Marathon to open the 2011 post-season Wednesday night. The victory moved the Wolverines into a matchup with Newell-Fonda at Newell on Monday night, Oct. 31.

Laurens-Marathon drew first blood Wednesday, taking an 8-0 advantage. The Wolverines would answer with a four yard run by Logan Streit. Jesse Zinnel ran in the conversion to tie the game.

The Wolverines would never look back the rest of the game, as they scored with 4:30 to go in the quarter as Logan Streit dived into the endzone from a yard out. Jessie Zinnel would pass to Sean Riesenberg for the conversion and 16-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Wolverines scored off a seven yard pass from Jesse Zinnel to Jason Zinnel, but the conversion run failed for a 22-8 lead. The Chargers would answer with a touchdown but their conversion failed for a 22-14 score.

On the resulting kickoff, Mitch Bonnstetter raced 70 yards for a touchdown and Jesse Zinnel ran in the conversion for a 30-14 lead. A final score before the half came when Zinnel connected with Matt Goeders for an eight yard strike with :33 to go in the half. Zinnel ran in the conversion for a 38-14 lead.

It didn't take long for the Wolverines to strike in the second half, as Jesse Zinnel broke loose for a 34 yard run with 10:57 to go in the third and ran in his own conversion for a 46-14 lead.

Laurens-Marathon scored with 8:45 to go in the third but WBM/GCB answered right back with a 48 yard run by Zinnel with 5:18 to go in the quarter. Logan Streit tallied the conversion for a 54-20 lead.

The Wolverines added one more score as Mitch Bonnstetter would score off a five yard run with 2:43 remaining in the period. Logan Streit's run made the score 62-20 to end the third frame.

Laurens-Marathon scored with 8:26 to go but the Wolverines added a final strike off a six-yard run by Nathan Grimm with 5:16 to go. The conversion failed, making the score 68-26. LM would push one more run over the goal line with 1:10 to play and the conversion made the final score 68-34.

WBM/GCB racked up 214 rushing yards off 29 carries and made seven of 14 passes for 63 yards to tally 277 yards offense, against the Chargers' 72 rushing and 236 passing yards for 308 total yards.

Jesse Zinnel had 17 carries for 88 yards and Logan Streit added 13 carries for 72 yards, while Mitch Bonnstetter rand three times for 16 yards and Nathan Grimm added two carries for 11 yards.

Jesse Zinnel completed seven of 14 passes for 63 yards, with Mitch Bonnstetter making two catches for 32 yards. Matt Goeders had two catches for 15 yards and Jason Zinnel added two catches for 13 yards. Logan Streit and Sean Riesenberg both had three yard receptions.

Defensively, Nate Grimm made eight tackles and eight assists with one quarterback sack, while Dustin Johnson had five tackles and two assists.

Matt Goeders added four tackles, four assists and two quarterback sacks, while Logan Streit added four tackles, four assists and a sack. Sean Riesenberg added four tackles and two assisted tackles to the effort.
