Former Emmetsburg resident Richard E. Varcoe died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at his home in Leesburg, FL. He was 90.
Richard was born in Emmetsburg, Sept. 19, 1921, the son of George Robert Varcoe and Vesta Jane (Barker)?Varcoe.
Shortly after graduating from Emmetsburg High School in the class of 1941, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served until 1946. After being discharged, he returned to Emmetsburg and joined his father and brothers in G.R. Varcoe and Sons. After his father's death, the business name was changed to Varcoe Brothers. After Varcoe Brothers sold out in 1949, Richard moved to Healdsburg, CA, where he continued in the construction business. Shortly thereafter he re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served until he retired.
After his career in the U.S. Navy, he lived in California for a while, then traveled extensively thro-ughout the contiguous United States and Alaska, finally settling in Alabama and then Florida.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Vesta V. Varcoe and Vivian Vanetta (Varcoe)?Wilson; four brothers, George W. Varcoe, Fred Varcoe, Harold E. Varcoe and Ellis E. Varcoe.
Richard is survived by one brother, Burton H. Varcoe of Emmetsburg; one sister, Bonnie M. (Varcoe)?Bickell of Tucson, AZ; and nephews and nieces.
Cremation was handled by the Harden/Pauli Funeral Home of Eustis, FL.
