The Algona Area High School girls swim team finished up their duel season splitting with Perry and Carroll in action Monday night at Perry. They lost to Carroll by a 71-23 score, but beat Perry by a 49-45 tally. Top finishes against Carroll included Nicole Kenne second in the 200 Free; Maddie Stubbs second in the 200 IM; Kendall Bosch second in the 100 Fly; Erica Carlson second in the 100 Free and Hannah Priest, who earned first place in the 100 Breaststroke event.
In the duel with Perry, first place finishes were won by Kenne in the 200 and 500 Free, Stubbs in the 200 IM, Priest in the 100 breaststroke and Bosch in the 100 Fly, with Carlson taking second in the 100 Free and Alyssa Williams earning second in the 100 backstroke
The 200 Med and Free Relay teams were first and swimming on those teams were Williams, Bosch, Stubbs and Priest, while the 400 Free Relay team of Stubbs, Bosch, Priest and Kenne finished second.
"We were able to score on Carroll much like we did Spencer last week, which was good, but all night we seemed to struggle with Perry," noted Swim Coach Jim Fisher. "But we competed hard and that was enough to beat them. We only has seven times that were season-best efforts. With four events to go we were tied with Perry but the 200 Free relay teams finished first and third and that gave us our lead and the girls held on."
The swim team then finished up the regular season Tuesday night at Charles City where they finished third in the Quadrangular meet.
"The girls were in fourth at the break and we talked about them each giving an extra effort to see what would happen and we were able to beat Vinton by 26 points after losing to them in the Charles City Invite by 33," Coach Jim Fisher said. "But we could not overcome Charles City's points in the diving portion plus we had three disqualifications on the night which hurt, but we had opportunities. There were nine faster times in this meet which shows improvement."
Hannah Priest earned first place in the 100 breaststroke and second place honors went to Nicole Kenne in the 500 Free. Kendall Bosch finished third in the 100 Fly and the 200 Med, while the 200 Free Relay team of Alyssa Williams, Hannah Priest, Kendall Bosch and Maddie Stubbs also finished third.
Alyssa Williams won fourth in both the 100 Fly and 100 backstroke and Nicole Kenne earned fifth place in the 200 free. Also finishing in fifth place were Emma Plathe in the 50 free, Michaela Christian in the 500 free and Abby Strohman in the 100 breaststroke.
The Algona Area team, comprised of swimmers from Algona, Bishop Garrigan, Emmetsburg and Estherville Lincoln Central, finishes their duel season with a 5-7 mark. The squad will compete on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the Class 2A Regional Swim Meet at Fort Dodge High School.
