Ivan J. Kirby 1917-2011

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ivan J. Kirby will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant is the Rev. Clem Currans.

Burial will be in the Pocahontas Catholic Cemetery at Pocahontas. The Marti-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation Friday, Sept. 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Parish Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Ivan James Kirby, son of Ed and Margaret (Miller) Kirby, was born Jan. 17, 1917, on a farm near Gilmore City. He graduated from St. John's Catholic School.

In 1942, Ivan was drafted into the United States Army serving in the 4th Air Force until January 1946 when he was honorably discharged.

On Jan. 17, 1950 Ivan was united in marriage to Adelaide Weishaar in Rolfe. To this union two children were born, Susann and Richard. Richard died at birth.

Ivan and Adelaide farmed near Pocahontas, Havelock and Mallard. Ivan did custom bailing in these areas as well. In 1983 they retired and moved into Emmetsburg. Three years later Adelaide passed away.

Ivan was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was also a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed dancing and doing woodworking. Ivan enjoyed traveling to Texas for many winters.

Ivan passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 94.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant son, Richard; three brothers, George, Don and Frank Kirby; sisters, Ella, Martha, Marie and Inez.

He is survived by his daughter, Susann Kirby of Mesquite, TX; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
