Emmetsburg News

A visitation for Linda L. Berkland of Emmetsburg will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Linda Lee Berkland, daughter of George D. and Grace (Ferguson) Freeman, was born Aug. 15, 1940, in Estherville. She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1958.

On June 25, 1961, Linda was united in marriage to Roger A. Berkland at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Depew. To this union four children were born.

Linda loved being with her family, caring for her children when they were young, watching them grow into adults and eventually parents to her grandchildren.

Linda had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and all that nature had to offer. She was very content at her home on the lake, caring for her flowers and pond, feeding and watching the birds around her home or fishing off the dock. She enjoyed slow boat rides around the lake and spending time with the family pets, horses, deer and other animals on the acreage.

Linda also liked quiet times indoors, whether reading a book while enjoying a cup of coffee or by scrapbooking and developing keepsakes of family trips and highlights in the Berkland home. Linda also enjoyed watching movies and was a big fan of "The Golden Girls". Other interests Linda had were playing cards, Liverpool and 500, as well as doing puzzles. Her most cherished time was that which she spent with Roger.

Linda passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Home in Mason City, at the age of 71.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger on May 15, 2011; parents, George and Grace Freeman; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Amos and Pearl Berkland.

She is survived by daughter, Terry L. Amato, and her husband, Dan, and their children, Natalie and Kristin of Emmetsburg; daughter, Pam Towne, and her husband, Doug, and their children, Mitchell, Molly and Garrett of Rye Brook, NY; daughter, Jackie Conway, and her husband, John, and their children, Tove and George of Mason City; and son, Roger Grant Berkland, his children, Brady, Adam and Nadia and their mother, Catherine, of Emmetsburg.
