WATERTOWN, WI -- Esther Marie (Newman) Matthiesen, age 86, of Watertown, WI, entered the presence of her Savior peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Golden Living Center of Watertown.
Esther was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Owensboro, KY, to Monroe and Iva (Willingham) Newman. She moved to Iowa in 1942 to live with her uncle and aunt, Henry and Juanita Willingham. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1943.
She married Russel E. Matthiesen on April 29, 1945, in Emmetsburg. Esther and Russel eventually settled in Curlew where she was much loved as a frequent hostess of family, friends, and church members. They lived in various locations in Iowa and Wisconsin.
After retirement they moved to Watertown, WI, to be near family. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Watertown. Esther enjoyed reading, sewing, baking, and making quilts for her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are her husband, Russel E. Matthiesen of Watertown; two daughters, Linda (Lawrence) Carlson of Watertown and Marcia (Lloyd) Carlson of Rockford, IL; two sons, John (Marlaine) Matthiesen of Valparaiso, IN and Paul (Jana) Matthiesen of Toledo, OH; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Polly (Alan) Colonel of Fort Worth, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and five sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church in Watertown with Rev. Robert Loggans officiating.
A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Burial will be at a later date in Rush Lake Cemetery in Curlew. The family would appreciate that any memorials be given to the Calvary Baptist Church and School of Watertown, WI.
