Funeral service for Virgil Tapps of Emmetsburg is Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David Biddle will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Virgil Tapps, son of Otto and Minnie (Kleemeire) Tapps, was born March 26, 1928, in Rockwell City. He received his education in Britt and continued his education at the Hamilton Business School for Accounting and General Administration.
Virgil served in the United States Army for 16 years and the Airforce for four years, receiving a Purple Heart. After retiring from the military, Virgil was employed with the Clear Lake Police Department and later went to work for the U.S. Postal Service at the Spencer Post Office.
Virgil was a member of the American Legion Post #33 in Ruthven, V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg, AmVets and Disabled Veterans Organization. He was also a benefactor member of the N.R.A. and the Palo Alto County Conservation Board.
Virgil passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 85.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Luverne Richard Tapps, Raymond Henry Tapps and Elmer Martin Tapps.
He is survived by a brother, Albert Tapps of Rio Rancho, NM; a sister, Gladys Charleson of Carbondale, IL; and his special friends, Wayne and Helen Barrett of Ayrshire; as well as many other friends.
