Funeral service for Eugene R. Schmeling is Friday, Aug. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Curtis DeFord will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
Eugene Robert Schmeling, son of Erwin and Elsa (Rambath) Schmeling, was born Sept. 27, 1931, near Cylinder. He graduated from Cylinder High School.
Gene enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and was trained as an electrician. On Feb. 26, 1955, Gene was united in marriage to Louise Keen in Washington, D.C. To this union four children were born. Gene retired from the Navy in 1970, with the rank of Navy Warrant Officer. After his retirement he and Louise moved to Emmetsburg.
Gene attended Iowa Lakes Community College from 1970 until 1972. He worked at Ken Krause Motors as General Sales Manager for nine years and then was employed by Combine Insurance Company until 1989.
Gene was a devoted member of Curlew Baptist Church and most recently Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg. He was very active in both churches, teaching Sunday School, serving as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Church Treasurer.
Gene passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 79.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard in infancy, Victor, Warren, and Darrel; a sister, Ruth Cansler; son-in-law, Steven Logemann; brothers-in-law, Forrest Whitcher, Clarence Canaday and Jean Cansler; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Schmeling and Evelyn Schmeling.
He is survived by his wife, Louise of Emmetsburg; his children, LeRoy Schmeling of Hutchinson, MN, Gail Logemann of Ledyard, Debbie (John) Larsen of Kellerton and Virginia (Paul) Johnson of Mankato, MN; 11 grandchildren; a great grandson; brothers, Emil (Marilyn) Schmeling of San Diego, CA, and Allan (Barbara) Schmeling of Denver, CO; sisters, Verona Canaday of Algona, June (James) Schultz of Garner, Yvonne (Walt) Wosje of Brookings, SD, Mary (Richard) Reinhart of Ft. Dodge and Carol (Howard) Chesling of Bushnell, FL; and sister-in-law, Colleen Schmeling.
