Another year has rolled around. The dog days of summer are again upon us. That means one thing it's time for Bully Bullhead Weekend in Ruthven!

Bully Bully Weekend (BBW) will be held this coming weekend, July 8, 9, and 10. Once again over 60 events for children, families, and adults of all ages will be in the offing.

This year's event is labeled as BBW 2011 You Can Bet on It! The winning slogan was chosen two-fold - first, you can always bet on BBW as being a fun time for everyone. And second, it offers the community's appreciation and thanks to the many dollars the Palo Alto County Gaming and Development Corporation has granted this community since its debut. For a complete schedule log on to

The three-day event kicks off this Friday at 8 a.m. with the BBW tractor ride. Registration begins at 7 a.m. for this event that will travel around Lost Island Lake, then head south to Webb for the noon lunch. Pre-registration is not necessary, but is appreciated and you can call 837-4871 for more information.

Other Friday events include the Iowa State Bank Community Hot Dog Feed. This event is open to everyone and offers musical entertainment, good conversation, and the Citizen of the Year presentation. For kids in the 4th through 8th grade range, there will be a co-ed 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Centennial Park and Pool beginning at 5 p.m. The pool will also have a Teen Swim Night, with teens only until 10 p.m. Younger kids will enjoy the Kids Pedal Pull which begins at 6 p.m. near the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. And to end the night of entertainment, it's Bully's Bar and Grill! Yes, Bully's will be reopening for BBW after their early spring fire closed the business for remodel. Bully's will be featuring Karaoke at 9 p.m.

With over 30 events on Saturday's line-up, it would be impossible to write about all of them without filling the paper with words. Some of the highlights include the Fishing Contest sponsored by Murphy's Bait and Tackle. This kicks off at 7 a.m. The morning also offers city-wide garage sales with garage sale maps available Thursday night at Lakeland EZ Stoppe and at the post office. There will be a 5K, 11K, and Fun Run at Lost Island Lake, a Grand Opening Celebration with fun things for the kids to do at Relativity T's and Body Works Vinyl Graphics. These two businesses recently relocated to the south edge of town. There will also be a Kids Karnival at this location!

The slow pitch softball tournament begins at 8 a.m. and continues throughout the day. The BBW Bike Ride leaves town at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m., and offers rides of different distances. The Ruthven Community Care Center will be having free kids entertainment and inflatable's starting at 9 a.m. until noon at the Iowa State Bank parking lot downtown. The Lost Island Express will also be giving free train rides at this location!

Sandra Dvorsky will be back in town and will have her history show set up at the Ruthven Public Library beginning at 9 a.m. The library will also be holding their annual Friends of the Library Used Book Sale at this time. The Lost Island Nature Center will be presenting a program for the entire family at 10 a.m. with their presentation "Reptiles and Amphibians, Oh My." With all these morning events making everyone hungry, the Mason's will again be holding their popular Turkey Fillet and Brat Feed downtown beginning at 11 a.m.

Antique farm machinery at the care center grounds, and classic cars at Cricket Park. The Classic Car Show kicks off at noon in Cricket Park just north of the tracks downtown. Registration begins at 9 a.m. for this very popular car show.

Everyone loves a parade! The large BBW Parade begins at 1:30 p.m. and leaves from the set-up area south and west of the football field. Pre-registration for entering this parade is greatly appreciated, but not necessary. Call 837-4480 to pre-register. If not pre-registered, plan to get to the line-up early so you can have your entry information logged for the announcing stands which are located at the HiWay Caf on Old 18 and Gowrie; and also downtown at City Hall. If not pre-registered, you will be at the end of the parade.

The Pony Express will again be giving pony and wagon rides after the parade near the American Legion building, or you can cool off at the swimming pool which will open at 3:30 p.m. The Kids Karnival will also be continuing at Body Works Vinyl Graphics/Relativity T's on the south edge of town.

At 4:30 p.m., Dad's Belgium Waffles will be serving your supper at the Zion Lutheran Church as part of their 125th Anniversary Celebration! The waffle supper will go until 7:30 p.m. Saturday's activities will cap off with the Firemen's Street Dance downtown on Gowrie at Bully's featuring the popular classic rock band "BB and the Bullfrogs."

On Sunday, the Ruthven American Legion will be having their pancake, eggs, and sausage breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Legion Auxiliary will also be having a bake sale and White Elephant Sale at this time. Area churches will be having their regular morning services, except for Zion Lutheran Church, which will be celebrating extra special with their 125th Anniversary Service at 10:30.

Also on Sunday morning, beginning at 10 a.m., will be the BBW Fun Day Horse Show. This event will feature 47 riding events, halter classes, and showmanship classes. The event has several great prizes to award including tack, horse accessories, gift certificates and more. Invite your friends and neighbors and for more information call 712-260-2073. The show will be held at Rodeo Grounds on the southwest edge of Ruthven.

Other Sunday events include the co-ed volleyball tournament at Centennial Park and Pool beginning at 12 noon, and the Progressive Organ Recital which begins at 1:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church and features pianist Glenn Hendrickson from Armstrong. This event "moves" to each church in Ruthven and concludes at Lost Island Lutheran Church where they will be hosting an Ice Cream Social/Maidrite Supper from 4 pm until 7 p.m.
