MADISON, WI -- Morton B. (Turk) Murphy III, 89, passed away on Feb. 2, 2011. The son of Emma M. (Soens) Murphy and Morton B. Murphy II, he was born on Oct 28, 1921 in Sioux Rapids, IA, during the 1920s depression.
At the start of World War II, Turk joined the Navy. Building on his high school education, he took extensive night classes to pass an examination that allowed him to enter Officer's Candidate School to become a Navy fighter pilot.
Upon graduation, he married, on June 8, 1944, the young lady who had stolen his heart, Alys V. Petersen, whom he had met at the University of Iowa. He spent the war as a (night certified and decorated) fighter pilot with VF 34, flying off the carriers, Saratoga and Monterey, in the Pacific theater.
After the war, Turk and Alys were blessed with two children, Karen, now Professor Emerita, Departments of Zoology and Anthropology, Universty of Wisconsn-Madison and Peter, now a marketing executive in the dental field.
Turk retired from Economy Fire and Casualty Co. in 1984 after serving as vice president and regional manager. Upon his retirement, the good times rolled. He and Alys spent the winter months traveling throughout the southern United States in their RV, samplng the wonders and beauty of nature, expanding their knowledge of history, visiting friends, and learning to cook locally popular food.
Turk was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved nature and the outdoors, particularly with his dogs and friends. Among his other pleasures were duplicate bridge, grilling out, and making bread. His family came to enjoy delicacies such as pheasant, fresh trout, and turtle. He was an active member of Embury United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Alys; his children Karen and Peter; and his grandchildren, Jack, Will, Laine and Lesley.
A memorial service is being planned at Embury, IL, for sometime in May.
