Violence and Guns and Words

January 13, 2011
Emmetsburg News

To the Editor:

The shooting in the schools and in Arizona makes me wonder.

Who is responsible for the violence?? Who is to blame?

Let's see:

Does it start at a young age, when first graders are using "potty mouth" language on the playground?

Or did it start with "bullying" that progresses to murder or suicide?

What about the demands on kids to win at all ages?

We sit in our homes and watch T.V. commercials that can't advertise their product without violence, ie: the chicken wing slapping the guy in the face, as well as many others.

The music that some listen to - you can't understand the words and then the ones you do, redefine love as something selfish and sensual.

The verbal and physical abuse that occurs and someone knowing allows it to happen.

There is so much violence in the cartoons, videos, toys and games the kids learn at an early age "this is accepted."

The disrespect that is shown to those in authority - parents, teachers, fellow classmates, friends and on up to the political arena.

I quote from the sheriff of Pima County, who blamed the vitriolic political rhetoric that has consumed the country. "When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government, the anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous."

Rep. Giffords expressed concern, before the shooting, about the animosity against her by conservatives, including Sarah Palin's decision to list Giffords "seat as one of the top 'targets' in the midterm election, that the way she has it depicted has the crosshairs of gun sight over our district."

During his campaign to unseat Giffords in November, Republican challenger Jessie Kelly held fundraisers where he urged supporters to help remove Giffords from office by joining him to shoot a fully loaded M-16 rifle.

So are these two alone to blame?? No, I don't think so. I think we all are a little guilty.

Let's do away with hatred and violence, selfishness and greed, contempt and disrespect, corruption, pride, deceit and condemnation.

Let's share with each other our ability to agree or disagree, our opinions, our smiles, our giggles, hugs, warm fuzzies, joys, excitement, surprises, prayers and most of all love.

God Bless America - where freedom, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is still ours.
