Job Advocacy Program Helps Workers In Need

by Lori Hall
POSTED: November 3, 2009
Have you recently lost your job? Do you need a hand in sprucing up your resume or assistance in finding appropriate clothing for going on interviews? The new Job Advocacy Program through Upper Des Moines Opportunity has the means to help you out.

“We’re hoping to partner with individuals who have lost their jobs and need emergency funding, and are looking for part-time or temporary work,” said Evan Engel, who serves as a Job Advocate for Palo Alto, Emmet, and Osceola counties through Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

The Job Advocacy Program was started in September and is being funded through a Community Service Block Grant supplied by federal stimulus money. The program is also looking to partner with Iowa Workforce Development.

“Iowa Workforce Development had $2 million in budget cuts, and we’re hoping to work together to help cover the gaps in their services,” Engel explained.

The program can assist with job coaching and counseling, updating resumes, writing job letters, and more.

“If an applicant needs someone to watch their child while they attend an interview, we can assist with money for childcare. Or if someone needs professional attire for a job interview, we can help find them that clothing, ” said Engel.

The Job Advocacy Program is available for all ages. Participants must meet the income guidelines to qualify for assistance, however.

To arrange an appointment to learn if you’re eligible for assistance, contact Evan Engel, Job Advocate, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, at 712-298-0087.
