EHS Presents “Just Another High School Play”

November 3, 2009
by Lori Hall
What happens when the director fails to show up for opening night and the cast has to go it alone? The result is “Just Another High School Play.” Drama students at Emmetsburg High School will present the two-act comedy on Nov. 5, 7, and 8.

“Just Another High School Play,” written by Bryan Starchman, satirically covers many of the classic theatrical shows presented by high school drama departments.

“It’s a very funny play. Phil Brown plays the student assistant director and Lexie Carter is the stage manager. They end up having to run the show, and a series of mishaps follows,” explained Christina Liessmann, the play’s director. “There’s a lot of improvisation. Everything from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to ‘Our Town’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ is highlighted. There’s a hilarious scene involving an ‘E! True Hollywood-type’ story about how Elizabethan author Christopher Marlowe really died.”

The premise of the play involves a group of high school thespians that have been abandoned by their drama teacher for failing to show up for rehearsals. The students are not really sure what they are supposed to be doing, and end up having to fend for themselves opening night in front of a live audience. The student assistant director and the stage manager step in, find a box of scripts, which they pass out to the cast, and try to throw something together.

Christina Liessmann of Ruthven serves as director. Cast members include Matt Ballman, Meghan Berkland, Darcy Besch, Phil Brown, Lexie Carter, Kourtney Clasing, Natalie Gordon, Jared Janssen, Wesley Luna-Smith, Danielle Moreland, Hayley Myers, Eric Pelzer, and Molli Schmeling.

“Just Another High School Play” is produced by special arrangements with Eldridge Publishing Co.

Performance dates and times are Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the new Emmetsburg High School auditorium. Tickets may be purchased at the door prior to each performance. Cost is $3 for students and $5 for the general public.
