Spring is in the air and bike riders are on the road. Many began the riding season with the Spirit Ride in West Bend.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver designated May as Motorcycle Awareness Month, at the request of ABATE of Iowa, Inc. May’s spring weather brings motorcycle riders out on the open road.

“Whether it is for motoring to work, saving fuel in these rough times or just out for some enjoyment and a summer ride, please take a few extra seconds and start seeing motorcycles,” said Phil McCormick, ABATE of Iowa State Coordinator. “Look once, look twice and even a third and fourth time before entering a roadway. As motorcycles are more difficult to see than automobiles and trucks, they need to be seen just the same. Save a live this summer, slow down and take another look at that intersection. Put the cell phone away when driving in traffic. Keep in mind that there are a lot of everyday distractions that could be a matter of life and death.”

Motorcycle riders are encouraged to get safety checks done before heading out on the road. McCormick says to make sure the bike is in good running condition, ride straight and always watch out for the other guy. He also encouraged riders to take a training course and get a motorcycle endorsement on their license.

“Ride safe and be seen,” McCormick says.
