February 15, 2008 - Dan Voigt
Day three of the 2008 State Wrestling Tournament. I've been a little busy, taking photos of the E'Hawk and Graettinger/Terril wrestlers, and also working for the Iowa Newspaper Association as one of the photo pool photographers. No, that does not mean paddling around in a swimming pool, mint juleps being delivered pool side by easy-on-the-eye waitresses, either! Being a pool photographer means we meet before every session in every class in the press room, where the INA Staff hands us our list of wrestlers that we need to photograph. The INA offers its member newspapers the service of "hiring" the pool to get photos of the wrestlers every time they take the mat through the whole tournament. The photo gets e-mailed back to the paper that ordered it, and then they aren't burdened with the additional expense of mileage, hotels, parking, feeding (most important) and other costs, such as parking tickets, fines, you know, little things. Anyhow, its been fun so far to shoot kids that you don't normally see during the season, and kids that you might see wrestle. For example, on Thursday, I shot every Spencer wrestler in 3A, got the Graettinger/Terril boys, and even shot a couple of kids from Oskaloosa and Clear Lake. The pool is a pretty good group, we all get along pretty well, and in the down times between sessions, the press room, or our little corner, gets quite spirited. We have already solved 14 of the world's greatest problems, analyzed the current state of baseball and are in agreement that cow tipping should be an Olympic sport.
Now, if they could just get those recliners.
