My Champion
Thu, May 15, 2008 @ 11:31AM
It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. How often have we heard that adage? It’s such a cliché, but oh, so true. I attended the Emmetsburg West Elementary track meet on Wednesday. Nine-year old Alex, my third grader, participated in the day’s events. He ran on the track, he threw the football, he sat on the grass of the high school football field under the sun. There was a chill to the breeze, but it was warm in the May sunshine. I have to admit, Alex isn’t much of a runner, but he crossed the finish line for each race. I didn’t get to see his football throw, but I understand he did well (last year he won a blue ribbon in that event). He’s a strong boy with a lot of endurance. Like the Howlin’ Wolf song goes, he’s “built for comfort, not for speed.” Regardless, he’s my little champion.

Where has the summer gone?
Tue, May 13, 2008 @ 12:44PM
In a conversation with a coach the other day, the topic of the accelerated seasons for sports in our schools came up. As you may or may not know, the state governing bodies for girls and boys athletics moved the seasons up by roughly twoo weeks this school year, originally with the stated goal of allowing the winter sports seasons to be able to continue to hold their championships at the Wells Fargo Arena facilities in Des Moines. Officials of Des Moines and Iowa State University worked out a plan to bid for hosting various National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament events at Wells Fargo, and low and behold, the NCAA tournament dates were right on top of high school athletic dates. So, it was determined to be able to do all this, move the high school dates up a week or so on the calendar. This was done for the first time in 2008, so our state wrestling tournament was held on Valentines weekend.
